The Joy of Belonging
Is happiness possible if you have no experience of belonging to anyone? The feeling of belonging entwines your life with others, and you come to experience something of your own meaning through the relatedness of love. The opposite would be loneliness, an experience of belonging to no one. The ultimate meaning of religion is to experience our lives as belonging to god, to the god who passionately wants to belong to us. We already live and move and have our beings in God, but the personal experience of this is what gives rises to the feeling of belonging. This experience is open to all of us, but, depending on our personalities and backgrounds, it comes in different ways. Some may discover the sense of belonging to God by means of a deep awareness of nature, others through the experience of human love and caring.
Many will discover their belonging to God through an awareness of their own inner life, for at the core of that life is God. This sense of belonging to God comes gradually with our prayerful awareness of ourselves and of life around us. Those who seek passionately with perseverance, quiet prayer, and trust, will discover the goal of their quest, because it is God's will to be known.
